Ways to Reduce Printing Costs

Double-sided (Duplex) printing: Cuts your paper usage and paper cost per page by 50% instantly.

High-yield (XL) Cartridges: Though more expensive up front, they often double or triple your page yield, lowering ink cost-per-page by 20-30%.

Draft Mode: Reduces the volume of ink sprayed onto the page. Ideal for proof-reading, test pages, or internal reference documents.

Why Calculate Your Print Costs?

The Hidden Cost of Inkjet Printing

Printer manufacturers often sell printing hardware at a low price (sometimes even at a loss) and make profits later on replacement ink and toner cartridges. Because of this, cartridge ink can be one of the most expensive liquids you buy. Knowing your cost per page helps you make informed choices.

Evaluate Laser vs. Inkjet Budgets

Laser printers have a higher upfront cost but offer much cheaper toner cartridges that yield thousands of pages. Inkjet printers are cheaper upfront but have smaller cartridges that run out quickly. This calculator lets you input cartridges for both types to compare actual long-term expenses.

How Print Costs Are Calculated

Our calculation engine breaks down costs per page into simple components:

  • Paper cost per page: Calculated by dividing the price of a paper ream by the number of sheets (usually 500 sheets).
  • Ink cost per page: Calculated by dividing the retail price of the cartridge by the manufacturer-specified page yield. Manufacturer yields are typically measured at a standard 5% page coverage.
  • Weighted average: Adjusts calculations based on how many black-and-white pages you print compared to color documents.
