Canon printers are favorites among photographers and home users for their photo quality and removable print heads. But when a Canon stops responding — showing error B200, refusing to wake from sleep, or simply not printing — the fixes are different from HP or Epson. This guide covers Pixma, MAXIFY, and imageCLASS models with Canon-specific solutions that actually work.
Understanding Canon Error Codes
Canon printers communicate failures through numeric codes. Knowing the code saves you from trial-and-error fixes:
| Error Code | Meaning | Severity |
|---|---|---|
| B200 / B201 / B202 / B203 | Print head voltage error or overheating | Critical — usually requires replacement |
| B504 | Ink absorber full | Moderate — resettable with tools |
| 1401 / 1403 / 1485 | Cartridge not recognized | Easy — re-seat or replace cartridge |
| 1686 / 1688 | Ink has run out (override possible) | Easy — hold Resume for 5 seconds |
| E02 / E03 / E04 | Paper jam or feed error | Easy — clear jam manually |
| E05 | Incorrect cartridge installed | Easy — verify model numbers |
| E13 / E16 | Ink level cannot be detected | Moderate — chip or contact issue |
| 5100 | Carriage jam or obstruction | Easy — remove blocking objects |
Fix 1: Hard Reset the Canon Printer
Canon's memory holds error states that persist through normal power cycles. A hard reset clears them.
- Turn the printer off.
- Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall.
- Wait 5 minutes (longer than HP or Epson — Canon capacitors hold charge longer).
- Hold the Power button while plugging the cord back in.
- Keep holding Power for 15 seconds, then release.
- The printer will initialize. Check if the error is gone.
Fix 2: Fix the Dreaded B200 Error
B200 is the most feared Canon error. It means the print head is drawing too much current, usually because of an electrical short in the nozzles. Official Canon support will tell you to replace the print head or printer. Before you do, try these last-resort fixes:
B200 Fix A: Remove and Reinstall the Print Head
- Open the top cover and wait for the carriage to center.
- Remove all ink cartridges.
- Lift the gray locking lever on the carriage.
- Pull the print head straight up and out.
- Inspect the gold contacts on the back of the print head. If any are blackened or corroded, the head is electrically dead.
- If contacts look clean, reseat the head firmly, lower the lever, reinstall cartridges, and close the cover.
- Power cycle the printer.
B200 Fix B: Warm Soak the Print Head
Sometimes B200 is triggered by dried ink creating a short. A warm soak can dissolve it:
- Remove the print head (see above).
- Place it nozzle-down on a coffee filter soaked in warm distilled water.
- Let it sit for 30 minutes.
- Pat dry, reinstall, and test.
Reality check: B200 has a 70% permanent-failure rate. If both fixes above fail, the print head is electrically damaged. A replacement costs $40–$100. For printers under $120, buy a new printer.
Fix 3: Resolve Cartridge Recognition Errors (1401, 1403, 1485)
Canon's chip-reading system is picky. If the printer does not recognize a cartridge:
- Remove the unrecognized cartridge.
- Wipe the copper chip contacts with a dry lint-free cloth. Even a fingerprint can block reading.
- Wipe the printer's contact pins inside the carriage. Use a flashlight — the pins are tiny.
- Reinsert the cartridge until you hear a firm click.
- Close the cover and wait for recognition.
- If still not recognized, the cartridge chip is dead. Replace the cartridge.
Fix 4: Override "Ink Has Run Out" (1686 / 1688)
Canon tracks ink levels with a chip, but the physical ink tank may still have plenty of liquid. You can override the warning:
- When the error appears on screen, press and hold the Resume / Stop button for 5–10 seconds.
- The error clears and printing resumes.
- The printer will no longer track ink for that cartridge. Check physical levels by holding the cartridge to a light.
This works on most Pixma models. MAXIFY and imageCLASS models may require holding the OK button instead.
Fix 5: Fix Paper Jams and Feed Errors (E02–E04)
Canon printers are sensitive to even tiny paper fragments. A "ghost jam" can persist after the visible paper is removed.
- Turn the printer off and unplug it.
- Open the front cover, rear cover, and scanner unit.
- Remove the paper output tray.
- Shine a flashlight into every opening. Look for torn pieces as small as 1 cm.
- Use tweezers to remove any fragments. Never use sharp metal tools.
- Clean the feed rollers with a slightly damp cloth. Rotate them manually to clean the entire circumference.
- Reassemble and power on.
Fix 6: Clear Carriage Jam (Error 5100)
Error 5100 means the carriage cannot move freely.
- Turn the printer off.
- Open the top cover.
- Gently try to slide the carriage left and right.
- If it is stuck, look for:
- Paper clips, staples, or coins that fell inside.
- Dried ink buildup on the carriage rail. Wipe the rail with a cloth moistened with light machine oil or silicone grease.
- Protective foam or tape left inside from unboxing.
Fix 7: Reset the Ink Absorber Counter (B504 / 5B00)
Canon printers track waste ink in a pair of absorbent pads under the print head. When the counter hits a limit, the printer stops with B504 or 5B00. The pads are rarely actually full.
Pixma Models — Service Mode Reset
- Turn the printer off.
- Press and hold the Resume button.
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Keep holding both for 5 seconds, then release Resume while still holding Power.
- Press Resume twice, then release Power.
- The printer enters service mode. Press Resume 4 times to reach the waste ink counter reset.
- Press Power to confirm. The printer will restart.
Button sequences vary by model. Search for your exact model plus "service mode reset" if the above does not work.
Fix 8: Update or Reinstall Canon Drivers
Canon's driver suite includes IJ Printer Utility, Quick Menu, and My Image Garden. Corruption in any piece can break printing.
- Go to Settings > Apps and uninstall all Canon software.
- Restart your computer.
- Download the Complete Driver and Software Package from Canon's support site for your region.
- Install the package. On Mac, also grant Printer Monitoring permission in System Settings > Privacy & Security.
- Print a test page from the Canon IJ Printer Utility.
Fix 9: Fix Wireless Connectivity Drops
Canon wireless printers often lose connection after router firmware updates.
- On the printer panel, go to Setup > Wireless LAN Setup > Easy Wireless Connect.
- Download the Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY app on your phone.
- Follow the app's setup wizard to re-register the printer.
- If the router has band steering (combining 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under one name), disable it. Canon printers only support 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
Fix 10: Deep Clean the Print Head (Canon IJ Utility)
Canon's deep clean pushes significantly more ink than standard cleaning. Use it when nozzle checks show severe gaps.
- Open Canon IJ Printer Assistant Tool on Windows.
- Click Deep Cleaning (not regular Cleaning).
- Select the colors that are clogged.
- Click Execute. The cycle takes 3–5 minutes.
- Print a nozzle check afterward.
Deep cleaning uses a lot of ink. Do not run it more than once per day. After deep cleaning, print our free color test page to verify output quality.
Canon Maintenance Best Practices
- Print at least twice a week — Canon's removable heads dry quickly because they are not sealed as tightly as Epson's.
- Never leave cartridges out for more than 30 minutes — the print head nozzles dry and clog.
- Use genuine Canon ink for photo printing — third-party dye inks fade faster and can chemically react with Canon's photo paper coating.
- Run alignment after every cartridge change — misalignment causes banding that looks like a clog.
When to Replace vs. Repair
| Problem | Repair Cost | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| B200 after reset and soak | $50–$100 (new print head) | Replace if printer is under $150 |
| Ink absorber full (pads actually soaked) | $80–$150 (labor + parts) | Replace printer |
| Repeated carriage jam | $30–$60 (rail or motor) | Repair if printer is high-end |
| Wi-Fi board failure | $40–$80 | Use USB instead, or replace |
Summary
Canon printers reward methodical troubleshooting. Start with the hard reset, decode the error code, and address the specific failure. B200 is the only truly scary error — everything else is fixable at home with basic tools. Keep the print head clean, use the printer regularly, and always verify fixes with a proper test page.
